DESIGN | MARSALA 2015 Pantone Color of the year

PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR:  MARSALA

Every year there is a big buzz around the Pantone Color of the Year.  This year’s pick is Marsala, a deep red wine color with a bit of brown in it.  We weren’t loving it.   However, after we started collecting images of Marsala and seeing it paired with other colors – like lavender, pale blues, grays, and greens –  it began to feel like a really great wine (as the name would suggest!) that is even more delicious when it’s paired with other delicious things like fruits, cheeses and spices.

Here is a perfect example of Marsala paired with lovely pastels.

First glance, this empty room is seems awfully gloomy in Marsala, but it’s getting easy now to imagine adding pale blues & grays in artwork, upholstery, to compliment the stunning floor – and how this space would come to life.  The all over color on walls and on trim is brilliant, if the trim had been painted in a strong contrasting the color like a white, it would seriously risk being gaudy.  As it is, the muddy red is pretty gorgeous!

You know we always love a lacquered  – anything, and Designer Steven Gambrel’s pale blue/gray lacquered wall is amazing.  And look, there is Marsala adding a lovely warmth to the cool walls.

Marsala in chalk paint?  The color definitely has a rich opulence to it that doesn’t feel casual, but this Marsala “inspired” painted bench takes the color down to earth and has an unexpected freshness to it when mixed with the black & white art and rug.

What do you think – will you find a way to use Marsala this year?

Happy Painting!
